All the world loves a sunrise. This beautiful and poetic time of day has inspired many a deeply meaningful quote:
Today is the first day in the rest of your life.
Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
What light through yonder window breaks?
But I, being the quintessential night owl, much prefer to lay my eyes on a glorious sunset. While the two events are scientifically indentical, they have a very different emotional context. Humans tend to equate this ending time of day with death, loss and endings - day is done, gone the sun.
That's so sad.
From my way of thinking, sunsets speak a very different kind of message.
If it's been a good day, the setting sun says, Today was another precious pearl to add to the string of your life, and the memories you made are yours to treasure forever.
If it was a not-so-good day, the message of the sunset comforts me: You made it through this day! And no matter what mistakes you made or what sadness the world placed upon you, tomorrow is a brand new day where anything is possible.
And that is why I love sunsets best.
