Now there's a town whose reputation has taken a beating. Heralded in the previous mid-century as the Motor City, the home of Motown, and a shining example of America's industrial might, the city now lies in shambles. Just last week, for example, a plan was announced to abandon several dozen city parks, in order to save on maintenance costs.
But all is not lost. As I hopped off my plane today and trudged along toward the rental cars, I was struck by the simple beauty of the airport's recently updated architecture. Clean, white lines; windows that flood the terminals with natural light; even some interesting art installations...there is plenty to recommend this space. The workers were friendly and helpful, the passers-by were respectful and polite. I even found the traffic on I-94 to be way more chill than usual.
So here's to Detroit. This once-lovely lady has taken a horrible beating, but there's still plenty of life in the old girl. Don't count her out just yet.
