Day One

My first day on the ground In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was a blur of happy faces, interesting places, and delicious foods. See what I mean?

The view from my bedroom window in my new home away from home. Welcome to KL!

My first breakfast was Roti Canai, a flatbread with curry sauce, and Teh Tarik, steamed and sweetened tea. It was just as yummy as I expected it to be.

After a few morning errands of buying a SIM card and exchanging currency, we did a bit of sightseeing. This is the International Mosque.

My tour guide and primary host, Mohd Yuzairie. He's the best.

In the afternoon, while the men were at Friday prayer, I stayed with the womenfolk at my host's father-in-law's home. While they were out, the non-English-speaking great-grandmother and I cared for my host's three-year-old daughter, who was caught in the throes of a too-tired crying spell. Great-grandma and I bonded over our struggles to comfort her and by the time our little girl finally fell asleep, we had become fast friends. And when the men came back, we sat at this table and ate my first home-cooked traditional Malay meal. With our hands, as is the local custom.

Afternoon view from the hallway outside my host's front door. Blue skies full of high puffy clouds, and the KL skyline.

After the workday ended, we all headed down to the KL city center for an evening of shopping and visiting. These colorful fountains were a gathering place for locals and tourists alike.

Petronas Towers. These legendary skyscrapers are icons of KL and I can't believe I'm actually seeing them with my own two eyes.

^ Here I am with Aleesya, my host's daughter and my favorite Malaysian playmate. She makes me feel very much at home.
